Tavi Draugi launches senior school “The Power of Knowledge”

The charity organisation “Tavi draugi” is launching the senior education programme “The Power of Knowledge” for people aged 65 and over. The programme aims to promote lifelong learning opportunities for seniors, strengthen their knowledge and skills, and encourage active participation in society and the labour market.

As part of the “The Power of Knowledge” senior school, 80 free classes are planned until August 2027. They will be divided into six thematic areas: financial literacy; skills needed in the labour market; communication skills and improvisation; social participation and an active lifestyle; health literacy; and lifelong learning and intellectual development, which also includes English language classes.

The programme has been designed to address both practical everyday needs and opportunities to develop personal and social skills. Financial literacy classes will give seniors the opportunity to expand their knowledge of financial matters, while health literacy classes will focus on strengthening the knowledge and skills that help people take care of their health and well-being.

An important part of the programme is also dedicated to social participation, an active lifestyle, communication and intellectual development. Meanwhile, learning skills needed in the labour market and English is intended to provide seniors with additional opportunities to maintain or develop their professional activity.

The first financial literacy class will take place on 5 October 2026 at the NGO House, 43A Ieriķu Street, Riga. Going forward, classes will be organised regularly, with at least two classes planned each week.

“Tavi draugi” emphasises that “The Power of Knowledge” is not simply a series of classes – the aim is to establish a sustainable operating model for a senior school that can continue to develop after the project ends. During the project, “Tavi draugi” will improve the planning and organisation of classes, participant engagement mechanisms, and strengthen its capacity to implement senior education and social participation activities.

The project is intended to contribute to the development of a stable and active senior community where people have the opportunity not only to gain new knowledge, but also to share their experience, build new social connections and actively participate in community life.

The project is implemented within Measure 4.3.3.3 “Support for the development of social entrepreneurship and the social economy”, under the supported activity “Support for the implementation of senior school activities”. The project is financed by the European Social Fund Plus with co-financing from the state budget.
