"TAVI DRAUGI" - the joint Latvian-Ukrainian choir

Our choir’s story began in 2024, when several Latvian and Ukrainian volunteers dreamed of singing together. Dreams were followed by action, and very soon we found not only our wonderful conductor Emīlija, but also many like-minded people – colleagues, volunteers, and those for whom the choir is their very first connection with the association. Through heartfelt singing at rehearsals and by supporting the association’s good work at various events, we have experienced so much already.

We believe that the most beautiful moments are still ahead, which is why we invite you to join our choir community, discover Latvian and Ukrainian culture, and feel the energy and strength that are born in shared song.

Choir rehearsals take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the association’s premises at Lapeņu Street 23 (Skanste district).

This is another way for you to become one of us and do good for the support of Latvia and Ukraine – this time with a song in your heart!

Choir members’ stories
Emīlija Marta Paidere, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Choir:

The “Tavi Draugi” choir is not just a musical ensemble for me – it is a community where Latvian and Ukrainian voices meet in humanity. Being the conductor of this choir means creating a space where singing heals, strengthens, and reminds us that beauty can also be a form of resistance. To sing in such a choir is to find a place where, as Imants Ziedonis said, “suddenly the heart aches from beauty.”

I am Latvian. Since finishing school choir in high school, I had always secretly dreamed that one day I would sing in a choir again – but each time I lacked either time or determination. That was before “Tavi draugi”.

“Tavi draugi” is not only a group of passionate, selfless, and slightly crazy people who engage in charity and help others. It is also a place and a time to listen to your inner voice and bring to life ideas that make both eyes and heart shine. One of these ideas is our choir – a place where Latvians and Ukrainians meet in song and create a beautiful, heartfelt togetherness.

I sing in our choir to strengthen my Latvian identity and cherish our traditions by sharing their beauty with others. I also sing to inspire our Ukrainian friends, to create for them a safe and welcoming space, and to help them feel connected to Latvian culture, which means so much to them.

I am Ukrainian. Every day begins with news about my home, my native city, my country… There is a war – it is very тяжко (very hard)… That is why I am part of the association “Tavi Draugi” – to help my motherland, Ukraine.

Why do I sing in the choir of “Tavi Draugi”? Help is the FOUNDATION! But when I sing – whether at rehearsal or at a concert – I disconnect, recover, reset from the worries. It is as if a switch flips in my soul: dark to light, grey to rainbow colors. Simply – a breath of relief.

The choir also means positive emotions, smiles, mood… It’s like a hot shower at home on a freezing, cold day… In the choir I feel like a small cog in a very important clockwork mechanism.
