Invitation to a Charity Author Evening with Janīna Kursīte and Māris Mičerevskis

Charity organisation “Tavi draugi” invites you on Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 PM to a charity author evening and discussion with literary scholar and professor Janīna Kursīte and book publisher, publicist, and author Māris Mičerevskis. The event will take place at the association’s charity shop at 32 Ģertrūdes Street, Riga. Admission is free.
“Tavi draugi” continues its tradition of author evenings, introducing writers of various genres and their work, with proceeds from book sales directed to charity projects supporting people in Ukraine and Latvia.
The evening with Janīna Kursīte and Māris Mičerevskis will be a warm, informal conversation about serious topics through jokes and humor – including University of Latvia expeditions to Ukraine, books, folklore, deities, and spirits. We will discuss Janīna Kursīte’s books: “The Code of Dainas” – a guide to Latvian folk songs and how to understand them; “Latvian Deities and Spirits”, an encyclopedic work on Latvian mythology; and “Cultural Units of Latvia or Small Regions”, her latest book about the “atoms” that make up Latvia’s cultural space.
We will also talk about Māris Mičerevskis’ books “Seven Days in the Kingdom of Miltiņi”, a children’s book also published in Ukrainian and Polish and awarded the main prize in children’s literature by “Zvaigzne ABC”, as well as his newest book for both children and adults “Is It Easy to Be Long?”, co-written with his dachshund Frīda. The book was recently published and illustrated by the well-known Latvian cartoonist Gatis Šļūka.
Visitors will have the opportunity to receive books from both authors in exchange for a donation. Admission is free, but space is limited, so attendees are asked to confirm participation by filling out the application form here: https://ej.uz/autorvakars5.
The “Tavi draugi” charity shop is a platform for turning material donations into financial support for various charity projects helping war-affected Ukrainians and people in crisis situations in Latvia. The shop offers clothing, footwear, and accessories for adults and children, dishes, books, interior items, artworks, and souvenirs from Latvia and Ukraine. It also regularly hosts educational events and themed evenings to raise donations and strengthen the community.
