16 Firefighting Tanker Trucks to Head to Ukraine on Friday

On Friday, August 8, at 8:00 a.m., 16 firefighting tanker trucks from the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) equipped with rescue gear will depart for Ukraine from 23 Lapeņu Street, Riga. The convoy will be seen off by Minister of the Interior Rihards Kozlovskis, SFRS leadership, and representatives of the organization Tavi draugi (“Your Friends”).

This aid initiative follows a government decision made on July 8, when the Cabinet of Ministers supported the Ministry of the Interior’s proposal to donate 16 SFRS firefighting vehicles and specialized rescue equipment to Ukraine free of charge.

“With the ongoing active warfare in Ukraine, the significance of each aid shipment becomes increasingly important. The transfer of SFRS equipment will significantly support emergency responders in addressing the consequences of attacks,” emphasized SFRS Deputy Chief Colonel Jānis Grīnbergs. “Ukrainian firefighters are working under incredibly difficult conditions, risking their lives every day. Every firefighting vehicle that reaches Ukraine is not just a piece of equipment—it is also a symbol of hope.”

The vehicles will be delivered to Ukraine by SFRS officers holding special service ranks, who volunteered to undertake the mission during their off-duty hours. Interest in participating was remarkably high—more than 100 SFRS personnel expressed their willingness to go.

Ulvis Noviks, head of Tavi draugi, stated: “It is a great honor to deliver the largest SFRS donation to Ukrainian rescuers so far, together with SFRS volunteers. We are grateful to our donors, the people of Latvia, and local businesses—because only through their support and financial contributions can we provide aid to Ukraine’s civilians, rescuers, and defenders.”

The delivery of the firefighting vehicles and equipment to Ukraine is being carried out by Tavi draugi in cooperation with the SFRS, with transportation costs covered by both parties involved.

Media representatives are invited to attend the send-off event at 7:30 a.m. in front of the Tavi draugi hangar at 23 Lapeņu Street, Riga. Please send prior notification to: [email protected]
