Documentary Film About Animals’ Fates in War-Torn Ukraine to Premiere in Riga

A special charity screening of the documentary film “Us, Our Pets, and the War” will take place on May 12 at the Splendid Palace cinema in Riga. This event will mark both the Latvian premiere and the only opportunity to see the film in the country. Tickets are already available at www.splendidpalace.lv, and all proceeds will be donated to the organization “Tavi draugi” to support animals in Ukraine. The documentary’s creator, Anton Ptushkin, will attend the screening from Kyiv and answer audience questions following the premiere.

The film was created following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, aiming to present what’s happening in the country through a different lens—highlighting the relationship between people and animals. The documentary features a range of stories: some of animals abandoned amid the horrors of war, and others of the people who risk everything to save them. It’s a powerful and emotional portrayal of hope, love, humanity, and courage. One of the film’s most memorable quotes comes from Asya Serpinska, head of the animal shelter in Hostomel: “Save the animals to preserve humanity.”

“Us, Our Pets, and the War” is the work of Ukrainian filmmaker and travel blogger Anton Ptushkin, who rose to fame as the host of the travel show “Орёл и решка” (Heads or Tails). Since the war began, Ptushkin has devoted himself to war reporting, risking his life on the front lines to show the harsh and sometimes shocking reality of war. In 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky awarded him the title “Honorary Journalist of Ukraine” for his work in war journalism.

The screening in Riga is organized by the charity foundation “Sofi,” one of the first Latvian organizations to help animals affected by the war—both those who arrived in Latvia with their owners and those who remained in Ukraine. In collaboration with “Tavi draugi,” the foundation continues to provide regular support for Ukrainian animals.
